I am a Firefighter/EMT with 21 yrs in with a SF Bay Area Fire Department. My EMT license had expired while I was undergoing an eighteen month course of treatment for Stage III neuroendocrine carcinoma.I surprised my MD’s and myself and beat their continual prognosis pointing to a “poor outcome” finally returning to light duty earlier this year.Only problem was, even though I wasn’t returning to the field, as a condition of employment in our Department ALL MEMBERS must hold a current valid CA EMT license, NO EXCEPTIONS!
My choices were to retire, or being that my license expiration was over two yrs, start all over again at square one, as if I never had an EMT license these past 25 yrs..Although rooting for me, I suspected there were a few members of the Department and even members of my own family who really didn’t think I could do it all over again. The truth was, I wasn’t sure...
