Perfect amount of information in a perfectly time presentation. As I will be installing a new IFD540 in my 414 this week (purchased a few months ago but just got around to updating wiring and antenna). I will be replacing a GNS 530W, this and other videos have answered some basic concerns it had. I look forward to all the built in features and the enhancement in version 10.3. My intent is to have the IFD540 as my number one and GNS530W as number two with the idea of replacing the 530W with an IFD550 if testing and use is a s easy and beneficial as it seems. Read more >

I have the IFD540 installed in my Piper Dakota for almost 5 years now. Love the Avidyne over any other competition GPS. Full of features, intuitive and you can’t beat the flexibility to use hard buttons while having the convenience of a touch screen. I still find myself using the buttons more often due to the ease in turbulence or bumpy ride. The BT keyboard gives another dimension of experience and the iPad app IFD 100 adds a literal second unit on board. Not to mention that iPad app is free and so are all their s/w upgrades. Most valuable thing is that this unit has evolved in featured based on user feedback and feature requests. That means it’s driven by pilots like you and I. For me the IFD's are much more user friendly and capable than the 430's they replaced. The learning curve is shorter with the training app, the F. Bauer book and training videos provided. I felt comfortable before the units were installed. The intelligence of the comm tuning along with the facility id really cuts down on single pilot IFR workload. Approaches are easy to enter and the interface with the new DFC90 and older Avidyne PFD is good. For approaches; I use the SVS on the 550, Map on the 440 with Data visible on both units and charts on the MFD. I do like the charts on the 550 and usually have the briefing strip or profile up so that simply pressing MAP remind me of minimums and missed procedure.
I really prefer the knobs inflight when it is turbulent. Flight plans are easy to enter and amend although the windows for crossing restrictions, holds, etc are small and best... Read more >
